Antique Chinese Silver Beaker, Shanghai, China - Circa 1890

Product Description

This lovely antique Chinese silver beaker has been created using repousse and chased techniques and depicts the chrysanthemum plant. This was a very popular design at the time this was made and beloved by both the Chinese and European communities. The depiction is extremely lifelike and naturalistic. It features the chrysanthemum flower at various stages of its development from small bud to a blowsy full blown flower, together with its leaves and stems. The repousse elements are set against a finely worked background which provides a visual and textural contrast to the raised areas. There is a circular vacant cartouche to the centre front.

The beaker tapers inwards towards the base where there is a narrow band of plain silver. This is echoed to the rim, which has a wider band of plain silver. These frame the central repousse section to top and bottom.

The beaker has been stamped to the underside of the base with the letters HC, for the firm of Hung Chong & Co and also with Chinese character marks. The marks are clear and have been well struck.

Hung Chong & Co was a prominent and highly regarded retail silversmith based in Shanghai. They traded from premises at 11b Nanking Road. They were widely regarded as one of the best goldsmiths and silversmiths in Shanghai during the late 19th and early twentieth centuries.
