Antique Thai Silver-Gilt Niello
Octagonal Teapot,
Thailand (Siam) – 19th century

This niello teapot with eight panels of repousse animals and birds in parcel-gilt. The animals and birds sit, walk and climb amongst meandering foliage. Bands of Thai foliage cover the rest of the teapot including the spout and the lid.

The pot stands on eight feet with a rectangular handle and a cast floral spout. Some loss to niello and a noticeable restoration to spout, otherwise in good condition.

“This teapot and another Niello teapot are on the same shelf in our shop. It is enjoyable to compare them: this one has eight panels of repeating design, whilst the spherical teapot has a continuous decoration.” Joseph
