Antique Ottoman Silver Panelled Casket, Coat Of Arms Of The Ottoman Empire, Tunisia – 19th Century

Product Description

This elaborate rectangular wooden casket with hinged lid and mounted with finely chased silver panels. Curved handles at either end with mark in Arabic script.

A central cartouche on the top panel containing a royal turban flanked by two flags and several spears, is a representation of the Coat of Arms of the Ottoman Empire.

The ornamentation on the remainder of the casket consists of meandering vines ending in radial flower heads and embossed buds.

In the 16th century, the Ottomans succeeded against their rivals, the Spanish, in controlling Tunisia and Algeria. They established settlements along the coast of Tunisia, which received their income from the pirates operating in the Mediterranean.

By the early 19th century, Ottoman control of the country had weakened and the Ottoman Empire only maintained a symbolic authority.

The impact and influence of the Ottoman Empire on the arts and culture of Tunisia has, unfortunately, not yet been sufficiently explored or documented to be fully understood.

This box is a rare and impressive example of Ottoman silver with a Tunisian influence.
