Antique Thai Silver-gilt Niello Washing Bowl, Thailand (siam) – 19th Century

Product Description

A wide shallow bowl set on four S-curved feet and a concave circular foot. The bowl and foot with layers of heavily embossed lotus petals containing chrysanthemum leaves in silver-gilt on a niello background, the legs with further niello-work and in curved form.

A similar bowl was given by King Chulalongkorn to the United States as part of a toilet set and was catalogued as a ‘basin for washing the face’. In the US, the bowl was displayed in the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 – the US’s first official World Fair – and is now held within the Smithsonian’s Anthropology collection, along with several other gifts received from the Thai Royalty (USNM # 27148 and #27151).

In Thailand, these sets were used by high-ranking Thais. Similar betel sets can be seen in 19th century portraits of both men and women.

Other items in the toilet set include a ‘Rack for hanging face cloth’, a ‘bowl with lid and stand’, ‘two small cups’, and a shallow bowl with several small containers. All these items were in fine niello with chrysanthemum patterns.
