Very Rare And Large Sized Malay Silver Kettle, 1880/1900

Product Description

This large Malay silver kettle is a finely crafted object in excellent original condition. It dates to the late 19th century or to the early years of the 20th century. Few Malay kettles appear to exist now and we have been unable to identify a similar example. The kettle follows the European form but the ornamentation is pure Malay and of typical style. Using repousse and chased techniques, the design includes complex floral, foliate and geometric patterns alongside a distinctive double row of ribbing around the mid-point of the body, separated by a simple geometric diamond border. Almost the whole of the kettle’s surface has been ornamented and this work has been done with skill and artistry.
The style of the ornamentation suggests a Lower Perak influence. Roth illustrates several items from Lower Perak, particularly chelpas or tobacco boxes, with a distinctive and prominent ribbing, which separates different areas of ornamentation and this ribbing appears to be a recurring feature of that region’s silverwork. However, although the function of the ribbing on the kettle has been done for the same reasons, the design of the actual ribs themselves is different. Roth described the ribs of Lower Perak silverwork as ‘tapering top and bottom’ but those on the kettle do not and seem to be more of a variation on the lobed cavetto which can be found on a typical Maly dulang.
The body of the kettle is near spherical, sometimes described as bullet shaped, and rests upon a flared pedestal foot ornamented with a band of zig-zag biku gunungan (mountain ranges) pattern. To the lower part of the body, occupying the space between the foot and the ribbed border, is a repeating border depicting a large foliate sprig contained within an arched frame. The area above the ribs has been ornamented with an elegant trellis of alternating foliate and floral motifs separated by seed pods and flowers.
The cover, or lid, pulls off to allow the kettle to be filled and is surmounted by a spherical silver knob. The area around the base of the knob has been ornamented with vegetal motifs arranged in the shape of hearts, surrounded by a ribbed border similar to that on the body. The engraving to the handle is particularly fine, naturalistic and skilful. The spout is slender and arching, facilitating a controlled stream of water to be poured accurately from a height. The spout has been chased with straight lines to the halfway point to simulate the ribbed borders to the body and the lid.
